Google Introduced New Search Index €� Caffeine

Being interested in the internet technologies and making my living from writing about internet marketing and search engine optimization here and there, today I started my day as usual – browsing some news web pages to get some fresh information on what is going on in the Kingdom of Internet. As usually, among the pages I visit, was the Google official blog. And the post I noticed there captured all my attention and even took my breath away for a moment, giving a chance to my imagination to dream about how the web search is going to look tomorrow.

 

So, here is the big news – Google has just introduced the new search index, called Caffeine. No, I would better do this in capitals to highlight the importance and solemnity of the moment – GOOGLE INTRODUCED NEW SEARCH INDEX – CAFFEINE. If you like coffee, you will like this name, and if you like Google, beware ‘cause it may be addictive :-)

 

To better understand the practical meaning of this innovation to all, who use Google as the default search engine, it is necessary to remind that the search index is, actually, the core of search engine. It keeps all the information about every single page in the Internet, and every time when you type in your search query, search index returns the entries, linked with the keywords from your query. In simple words, search index is like a table of contents in your phone book. It tells you which page to open, if you look for a grocery store, for example.

 

The new search engine is said to be much quicker in updating its information. That means, it will generate more fresh content for the search queries and people will always get the freshest and the newest information they are looking for, whether it was published on a forum, site, or blog.

 

Years before, Google search index had a structure, resembling a tile or multiple layers structure. Some of these layers were updated daily, but others took weeks to update. It means, some web pages could require days and even weeks for being available through web search, because there was some delay between a moment Google spider finds a web page and time the information is updated in the search index.

 

Now, Google has announced a new structure of its search index. It really looks like a web, where multiple links and lines are interconnected. Officials claim it to be super fast in processing new pages just to supply people with the most updated information they are looking for. Furthermore, Google notes that today content is not only about texts, it is also much about video and other types of multimedia. Caffeine is better tuned to work with such forms of content as well.

 

According to Google, Caffeine engine is capable of processing hundreds of thousands of pages simultaneously. The information of the search index is kept within a database of nearly 100 million gigabytes of storage with hundreds of thousands of gigabytes added each day. Wow, imagine what kind of server they need for that…

 

However, aside of technical innovations and technological novelties, which can be appreciated at their true value by software engineers or web application experts, actually, I believe that we, typical web users, may not even notice the transition to a new search index. However, those, involved in internet marketing and search engine optimization, will definitely benefit from Caffeine. Now, with this trend for super new content, sites will literally need to become live. Weekly and even daily updates may no longer be sufficient for successful internet marketing. Content will need to be updated even more frequently. Besides, the role of social media platforms is going to progress with their rapidly user-generated content.
