The Procedure Of Domain Name Transfer

Published on 06/08/2010 by Mykola Stepanyuk
Sometimes it is necessary to transfer a domain from one registrar to another. The reasons for such decision may be different, for example, you change website hosting company and want them to hold your domain as well. No matter why you wish to transfer your domain, it is crucially important to understand the procedure and follow it strictly in order to successful transfer your domain to a new domain registration company.

First of all, it is necessary to mention that ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Figures) has special policy on transferring domains between registrars. This policy says that it is only the Administrative Support (usually, this is the initial registrar) and Registered Name Holder (domain owner), who can approve the transfer of the domain to a new registrar, called Gaining Registrar. By the way, the authority of Registered Name Holder supersedes that of Administrative support.

Typically, the procedure of transferring a domain looks like following:

1. Domain owner notifies his old registrar that he wishes to transfer his domain to a new registrar. If there is a domain lock on the registration, old registrar notifies a code for domain lock to domain owner.
2. Domain owner contacts new registrar and provides a code for domain lock.
3. New registrar contacts old registrar with the notification of the transfer request.
4. Old registrar contacts domain owner to get the authorization of transfer request.
5. Once received a confirmation from domain owner, old registrar releases a domain to a new registrar.
6. The new registrar notifies domain owner on the completion of the procedure.

Usually, the whole process takes about 5 working days, however, the delays are possible. That is why, it is recommended not to initiate domain transfers, when the domain is about to expire, since that can result in impossibility to transfer the domain and even losing it.
