Forums > Domain Name Registration > What is Domain Parking?
|
Domain parking usually refers to the situation, when an individual or organization purchases/registers a domain name, but does not use it for publishing a website on it. Actually, every domain name needs to be linked to a domain name server (DNS), but if you are not ready yet to invest in website hosting, your domain name registration company can “park” your purchased domain on their own web server. Thus, you become the owner of a domain name, but do not use it for any purposes, such as publishing content or setting up email accounts.
Domain parking is used for many reasons. Some choose domain parking, when they are not ready to build a website yet, but wish to own a particular domain name before it is occupied by someone else. Others buy domain and park them just to resell them in future. It is also possible to redirect traffic from the parked domains to a main domain. However, whatever your motivation for domain parking is, this is a quick and inexpensive way to become the owner of a domain name.
Domain names are usually parked for the term of one year. During this time you can, surely, move your parked domain to a hosting provider and develop fully-functioning website. Alternatively, you can keep the domain parked for future use or resale.
When internet users visit the domain name, which is parked, they usually see the information such as “Under Construction”. Sometimes, domain name registrars publish their own advertising on such parked domains to monetize them.
