|
Though there are many discussions out there in regard to whether a high personalization of the web is good or evil, Internet giants continue to increase personalization of their online services.
Thus, Google has announced on June 2, that it starts rolling out the new feature for homepage personalization. Now, every user (ok, not every, but only those, who are logged into their Google accounts) can change the background of Google homepage. Being the example of esthetic minimalism in website design for years, the homepage of Google search can now be easily customized by uploading a photo of your pet, favorite actor or your own painting to Google, and, voilà – it appears on the homepage as the background. Of course, such personalization will be visible only for you (and maybe some folks from Google:-) on your own computer, so don’t be shy to use your private photo from the beach as a background…
Seriously speaking, personalization is just one of the internet marketing tools, aimed to make online services more attractive to users and increase their loyalty, since the whole business of search engines is build on users or, to be more exact, on showing commercial advertisings to them. And when you logged in, Google can track what exactly you are looking for and show you the most relevant and targeted ads. Basically, this is not an evil technology, but a sophisticated route of internet marketing. Actually, its cool for now, however nobody knows how deep such personalization can get into our personal lives and private confidential information…
