Forums > Domain Name Registration > Non-Latin Characters in Internet Address Receive Final Approval from ICANN
|
Following the previously reported plan about the use of non-Latin characters, such as Arabic or Cyrillic, in the names of internet addresses, the ICANN has reported recently about issue of the final approval for the use of national scripts in the last part of the domain name following the dot. Currently four countries received the approval from the ICANN to use their national script symbols, such as Cyrillic or Arabic, in the process of domain names registration. These countries are Egypt, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Since the program of domains internationalization develops in stages, currently the alternative symbols are allowed to use in the country code top level domains only. For example, the Russian Federation as of April, 2010, is granted to use its own domain zone “.??”. Initially, the trade marks holders and state authorities will receive priority in registering local domain names. After about 6 months period non-Latin domains will become available to most of the consumers and web site owners.
With these changes the domain name registration is believed to become more flexible. It is expected that the Internet should get closer to the customers, who would prefer using their native language and alphabets instead of English while browsing the Internet.
