|
Search engine optimization involves a number of different techniques, and an appropriate domainname registration is one of them. Basically, the core idea of any SEO project or internet marketing campaign is to promote a particular web site among the targeted audience. Often targeted audience means people living in a particular geographical area.
Since recently Google, which is one of the leading search engines, has been using geotargeting in showing its search results. For example, searching for “SEO news” from the UK you will show UK-based results on the first page, but if you do the same searching from the USA you will see different results at the top of your search results.
Such approach has made the country-code top level domains or ccTlds extremely valuable for search engine optimization. Now, if your site aims at selling computers in the UK, you just use the co.uk domain level. Using such ccTld instead of top-level domain, such as .com or .net, is more beneficial these days, because it clearly tells Google what is your target audience. Besides, it is easier to win the competition for a particular keyword at a local level than at a global one.
However, there is still one more option to influence geotargeting without changing a domain name or physic location of the web site. With the help of Google Webmaster Tools, one can specify the location of the site via Site Configuration – Settings.
