CMS Migration Issues

Published on 03/07/2010 by Mykola Stepanyuk
Migrating content from your existing CMS to a brand-new web content management system may look as a pretty complicated assignment. Lack of practical advice and efficient tools in this field may lead to a situation, when developing a new site on a new web site CMS platform will be more cost-effective than migrating content from the old CMS. However, content migrations are still often required, especially, in corporate infrastructures with huge web sites and extensive content databases.

In order to make the process of content migration to a new CMS solution less stressful and more efficient, it is important to prepare properly for the migration, evaluate all the potential risks and clearly define the targets and milestones. The following tips may be of help for developing a successful migration plan.

1)      Conduct a thorough audit of your content. Remove all the unnecessary texts, images, and script files. Fix the broken links and clean all the content that needs to be relocating to a new place.
2)      Create redirects. A new CMS will involve a new web site structure, and consequently new URL addresses of all the pages. To save all the previous URLs working it is necessary to create 301 redirects, pointing every old page to a new destination.
3)      Be careful with hyperlinks. Both internal and external hyperlinks are likely to be broken during the migration of the content from one CMS to another. An accurate site map can help a lot in restoring all the necessary hyperlinks in your new system.
4)      Sort your content. It is recommended to sort all the content in your old system and create a detailed inventory list of all the files, which need to be migrated.
5)      Get ready for a time-consuming procedure. If your current CMS includes only a hundred of pages, there is nothing to worry about, but if there are thousands of multiple files, it may turn into a very time-consuming procedure. So, arm yourself with patience, or think about specialised CMS migration services.
