|
It looks like the times of Roman alphabet as the only characters to be used for domain names are coming to an end. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number has announced at the end of year 2010 about the launch of a new revolutionary program that will allow using non-roman characters, for example, Cyrillic or Arabic, in the domain names registration process.
Experts consider that using local scripts in domain names will improve the Internet experience for those people, whose native scripts are other than Roman alphabet with A to Z characters. Thus, the European Union has already introduced the use of non-roman characters in the local .eu domain names. The accented characters, such as 'ç' or 'ñ', and basically any other character which is used in one of 23 official languages of the European Union, are now acceptable for new domain names registration.
So, basically internet is getting more and more liberalized these days. However, many experts consider internationalized domain names to be an additional risk factor, which will increase the fishing risks and spreading of multiple scams in the internet. As of January 2010, Egypt, the Russion Federation, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates were the first countries to have passed the Fast Track String Evaluation within the IDN ccTLD domain application process.
