Typography For Website Design

Published on 01/29/2010 by Wayne Foster
A very important aspect of any website design is the choice of typography. There is more to typography than simply choosing a suitable font for a web page or deciding on the correct text size for a document. Typography for the web has made massive in roads with web browsers which can now support images. Web designers are now free to be as creative as they please with their web typography and can really focus on creating web designs which truly attract the viewer’s attention.

What is Typography?
Typography is the concept of creating a reader friendly web page which will also attract the attention of its viewers. There are four fundamentals parts to achieving good typography. These are contrast, size, hierarchy and space. Let’s examine each of these areas more closely.

The Value of Contrast with Typography
While certain colors may blend and look really good in some circumstances, they are not always great when it comes to web typography. You need to make sure the chosen typography for your website contrasts significantly with the background color of your site. After all the whole idea of adding text to a website is to ensure viewers actually read it.

Size Matters when it comes to Typography
It can be really off putting to viewers when the typography of a web page is too small. You want to make reading your text as easy as possible, so ensure you don’t opt for text which is lower than 10px. Remember, when it comes to typography, the bigger the text the better.

Hierarchy and Typography
A good way to differentiate between the key elements of website text is by introducing a hierarchy system to your typography. Make the most important aspects of your site stand out.

A Clean Space helps Typography
To ensure typography is clearly presented to its viewers, web designers should avoid cluttering up the web page and instead try to maintain space so that the web page is clear and easy to read.

What I would only add to this article is that font family is also of great importance for the successful website design along with color, contrast, size and other physical parameters of the font. Such term as "web safe fonts" even exist, which refers to the most widely spread font families, using which will increase the chances of similar displaying of a particular web page irrespectively to what browser or OS is used by visitors.

The problem here is that a website can be displayed by a browser only with the fonts, installed on the local computer. So, if one uses some exclusive font, trying to build a website with exclusive text decoration, he has great chances to end up with the complete mass of the layout, when viewed from computers, others than the one, where the site was created . That is because those computers may not have that very specific font, that was used for website design.

That is why, web designers tend to use standard sets of fonts, which are included by default at all the major browsers and operating systems. As far as I know, the examples of web safe fonts are such computer fonts as Arial, Times New Roman, Georgia, Lucida, Verdana.

However, if you still want to use some fancy font, you can still do it - but in that case text should be transformed into graphics, which is not always good for internet marketing.
