After having selected your domain name, consider the following points in registering the domain name:
Register Multiple Extensions
It is a good idea to register various domain name extensions, called top level domains. People often type in various extensions because they want to be sure to investigate all the websites that have the same name. So, if you own www.mysite.com, you should also buy www.mysite.net or www.mysite.org, then point one site to the other. This ensures that you will not lose traffic due to an incorrect extension.
Register Multiple Variations
Another good idea is to register different variations of your domain name so that you are assured of catching visitors who enter words that are very similar.
Register Misspellings
If your business name can be easily misspelled, chances are that it will be. Be proactive and register the misspelled name so that you are guaranteed of catching the traffic.
Register Both the Full Name and its Acronym or Abbreviation
If your selected name is long, register both its full version, as well as its acronym. Many big companies failed to do this and have seen the consequences of this oversight. An example is General Motors which only registered www.gm.com but not www.generalmotors.com.
