There are many important points to remember when you are registering your domain name. One aspect you will need to consider is the extension your domain will have.
 
The .com extension is by far the most recognized domain name and if it is available you should definitely register it. With this in mind there is no advantage when determining search engine rankings based on the domain extension, so if a good .net, .us, .org, etc is available you should at least think about registering them also.
